Odoo 20 Is Coming: AI Roadmap, MCP Server and Key New Features

Posted by Nguyên Đặng

Barely after the dust settled on Odoo 19.4, the roadmap for the next major version was already unveiled. Odoo 20 is expected to be officially announced at Odoo Experience 2026, held in Brussels from September 24 to 26, 2026. This roadmap was presented by the Odoo team back in April 2026, and they themselves jokingly described it as “a list of things we will maybe do,” meaning the final details may still change before launch. This article rounds up the most noteworthy directions from the original roadmap slides presented by Luc Nailis, Product Owner at Odoo, at Odoo Partner Days, and will be updated as soon as Odoo announces the official release.

Overall Direction

From Odoo 19 to Odoo 20: shifting from “more features” to “smarter”

If Odoo 19 was an update focused on expansion — adding features, improving performance, and refining the interface across most modules — Odoo 20’s direction is quite different. Instead of continuing to pile on more functionality, Odoo seems to want the system to do more of the work for users: suggesting, automating, and cutting down on manual tasks.

Put simply, in Odoo’s own words: version 19 made the system more powerful, while version 20 aims to make it smarter and easier to use. This was the message presented at Odoo Partner Days back in April 2026.

This is worth noting for businesses considering an upgrade, since it directly affects future staff training: a system that proactively suggests things requires a different way of working than one that simply waits for user input.

AI

AI is no longer a standalone feature, it’s woven into every workflow

The biggest difference from how AI was implemented in earlier versions is this: AI in Odoo 20 isn’t confined to a single module, it’s scattered across Accounting, Website, Helpdesk, and even record creation and updates.

One notable example is the idea of “Accounting for non-CFOs”: an AI Agent that can run through cash flow and financial checks on its own, summarize the findings, and flag anomalies, without the user needing deep accounting expertise. This is the kind of feature that genuinely matters to small and mid-sized businesses, where the owner often ends up handling the books without formal accounting training.

Alongside that, a feature that lets users search, reassign, or create records across the entire database using natural-language commands (for example, reassigning all leads from one salesperson to another) is a small detail that saves a huge amount of manual work for sales or operations managers.

Technical & Integration

A native MCP Server: the most notable move for technical teams

While Odoo 19.4 only added support for connecting the database to external tools via the MCP (Model Context Protocol), Odoo 20 (Enterprise) is expected to ship with its own built-in MCP Server. Previously, connecting an external AI to Odoo required going through an intermediary gateway; with a native MCP Server, that middle step is no longer needed.

At this stage, the module is said to support 5 read-only function groups (context queries, model listing, field inspection, record search, and grouped analytics), protected via a dedicated API key section. Write functions already exist in the code but are disabled by default; an administrator has to turn them on manually.

This cautious design choice shows that Odoo is prioritizing data safety first, rather than rushing to open up write access for AI right away — something anyone who has worried about security risks when integrating AI into an ERP will appreciate.

Payroll, POS & Accounting

Payroll, POS, and Accounting: practical, everyday changes

These three areas appear to get the most operationally meaningful changes, not the “showcase” kind of feature:

  • Payroll: a new dashboard for HR teams surfaces pending items right away, such as missing bank accounts, employees without contracts, or outdated payslips. More notably, the concept of separate “work entries” is being removed entirely. Payroll will be calculated directly from Time Off data, cutting out a layer of reconciliation that often causes errors every pay cycle.
  • POS: connecting hardware (printers, devices) through the Chromium browser eliminates the need to import certificates, a step that has long frustrated many retailers. There’s also a redesigned floor plan editor for restaurants and new payment integrations.
  • Accounting: the ability to send payments directly from Odoo to the bank (generating a SEPA XML file or signing an entire batch with a single signature) lets businesses handle payments without leaving the platform, while the system can also automatically generate adjustment entries for exchange rate differences.

Website, eCommerce & Marketing

Website, eCommerce, and Marketing Automation: tightening the customer journey

Where Odoo 19.4 only went as far as automatically attaching structured data to help pages qualify for Google Rich Results, Odoo 20 appears to go further: faster page load times, better redirect management, and fixes for SEO-critical issues that often get overlooked, like no-index, sitemap, and canonical URL handling.

On the eCommerce side, the standout feature is automated cross-sell, where the system suggests related products directly during checkout, along with standalone catalog pages and a more complete return-management flow. This builds on the Website and social-media marketing features already introduced in Odoo 19.4.

But the biggest change in this area is Marketing Automation, which is getting an almost complete overhaul with a visual flow builder that supports a wide range of step types: Email, SMS, WhatsApp, internal activities, notes, branching, filters, delays, and even AI steps.

This is the kind of feature marketing teams should watch closely, since it brings Odoo closer to dedicated automation tools like ActiveCampaign or HubSpot, rather than stopping at basic bulk email.

Phone & Mobile

Phone and Mobile: changes that fly under the radar but matter

These are two areas that rarely make headlines but can directly shape the daily user experience. On the Phone side, Odoo 20 will let businesses purchase phone numbers in over 100 countries directly within the system, along with a visual callflow configuration tool: time-based routing, queues, holiday calendars — things that previously often required a separate phone-system service.

Discuss and Phone are also getting an Audio/Video player with a synchronized transcript, making it much easier to review call content or follow up on action items after a call.

On Mobile, the interface has been redesigned from scratch, reorganizing form views for smaller screens and touch interaction. For sales teams or technicians who frequently work out of the office, this kind of “quiet” improvement is often what decides whether staff actually use the mobile app or just keep reaching for a laptop.

New Verticals

New verticals: Odoo moves into some very specific industries

Odoo 20 is expected to add a range of dedicated industry-specific solution packages, instead of leaving businesses to assemble one from standard modules. The most notable are likely Hotel+ (occupancy management, channel manager integration, seasonal pricing, housekeeping) and Construction (quoting by work item, WBS-based planning, progress-driven billing).

There are also new packages planned for auto repair shops, custom industrial equipment, nursing homes, and community care services.

For businesses operating in these industries, this is a solid reason to watch Odoo 20 closely, beyond just the general AI features, since it could significantly shorten implementation time compared to customizing everything from scratch.

Important Note

Why it’s worth watching, and why you shouldn’t take it as final yet

The Odoo 20 roadmap points to a fairly clear direction: reducing complexity for everyday users, embedding AI where it actually adds value rather than for show, and tightening the integration between modules. That’s a good signal for businesses weighing a longer-term upgrade path.

That said, it’s worth repeating: as of this writing, Odoo 20 has not been officially released. Everything above comes from an internal roadmap Odoo shared in April 2026, and Odoo itself has acknowledged that it’s only a planned list that may change before launch at Odoo Experience 2026 (September 24-26, 2026).

So if your business is planning an upgrade, treat this as information to prepare for and to identify which areas are likely to benefit most (AI, Website, Accounting, Payroll), rather than locking in a plan entirely around features that haven’t been officially confirmed.
